The deadline is drawing near for sculptors to submit works to the annual Sculptures in the Garden event at Mudgee’s Rosby Vineyard.
For one weekend of the year, the large garden of the Rosby homestead fills with hundreds of sculptures in every shape and media, ranging from scrap metal to cast bronze.
Entries will close on Friday, September 11, one month before Sculptures in the Garden is held on October 10 and 11.
Sculptures in the Garden is one of the Mudgee region’s biggest art events and one of the biggest sculpture exhibitions in rural NSW.
Last year more than 270 sculptures were exhibited in the Rosby garden under the Eurunderee hills, and organisers expect around 3,000 visitors through the gate in 2015.
The event allows local sculptors to exhibit alongside celebrated artists from around Australia, and to sell their work – in 2014 more than half the sculptures sold, including pieces purchased by Mid-Western Regional Council for public display in Lawson Park.
The best Mudgee sculptors feature alongside artists who have produced public works for the City of Sydney, and others who have featured in Sculpture by the Sea.
As well as bringing Australia’s celebrated sculptors to Mudgee, Sculptures in the Garden draws art lovers from Sydney and around regional NSW, and has built up a strong following that includes Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, now a regular guest.
This year for the first time, Dame Marie Bashir will open the event and announce the winners of the acquisitive prizes on the Saturday morning.
Sculptures in the Garden is a not-for-profit event, with proceeds going to the Mudgee Support Group of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT and the purchase of public art for a sculpture walk in Mudgee’s Lawson Park.
Last year’s event raised more than $20,000 for the Mudgee Support Group for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT.
With one month left before the entry deadline, it’s time for local artists to complete an entry form and ensure their work is part of this exceptional annual event.

One of the largest sculpture exhibitions in rural NSW, Sculptures in the Garden 2015 has issued an open call for submissions from artists.
Held over Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October 2015, the not for profit outdoor exhibition features local, regional, Sydney and interstate artists.
Event organizer, Amber Norton-Knight, says Sculptures in the Garden 2015 provides artists a unique avenue to exhibit their works.
“Sculptures in the Garden 2015 is set in beautiful rural surroundings within a private garden and vineyard in Mudgee, NSW,” Amber said.
“We anticipate more than 3,000 visitors will attend the exhibition over the weekend, providing huge exposure for the artists
“It’s also very likely that they will sell their work. Last year, Sculptures in the Garden displayed over 270 sculptures and more than 50% were sold.”
Proceeds from the weekend exhibition will go to a local arts initiative to develop a sculpture walk in Mudgee’s Lawson Park.
“This year, Mid-Western Regional Council will be purchasing sculptures from the exhibition up to the value of $11,000. The acquired work/s will be part of the Mid Western Regional Council public art plan,” Amber said.
Other prizes will be bestowed upon artists in the form of a People’s Choice Award and $5,000 Acquisition Prize. The winning acquisition will be part of Mid-Western Regional Councils public art collection.
The Mudgee Support Group of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT will be assisting throughout the 2-days running the gate and providing catering for the event.

Sculptures in the Garden 2014 Success!
The SIG Committee would like to thank all that participated in the 4th annual Sculptures in the Garden exhibition and helping make the event such a success. We are all very pleased with the results of the exhibition and feedback that we are receiving. Over the course of the 2 day event Rosby welcomed over 2,300 people through the gate, sold approximately 50% of all artwork exhibited and raised with the help of the Mudgee Support Group for Guide Dogs over $20,000 for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT.
The event this year has received extensive coverage in the local and wider media with the profile of the event and Mudgee Region receiving a significant boost. We look forward to be able to build upon this platform and grow the event further next year.
Congratulations to our 2014 prize winners. Ulan Murray's work “Acacia" was awarded the Moolarben Acquisition Prize and "Cube Stack" by Alex Scheibner and "Heavy Load" by David Walsh was acquired by the Mid-Western Regional Council as part of their Public Art Collection and all three works will be installed in the coming weeks. Congratulations also to Wendy Black who received the People’s Choice Award for her work “Catch!"
This year was the first year we have had formal acquisition prize and we hope to increase the amount of prize money and types of awards available for next year’s event.
But more importantly please put next year’s exhibition dates in your diary as we will be back bigger and better on the 10th & 11th of October 2015. If you would like to be involved again next year or have any feedback or suggestions on how we could improve the event we would love to hear from you.

Sculpture in the Garden raises over $20,000 for Guide Dogs in 'best year yet'
Organisers of Sculptures in the Garden have called this year’s event on October 11 and 12 their “best year yet”.
Amber Norton-Knight from Rosby Wines said more than 2300 visitors walk through the gates over the weekend, and more than 50 per cent of the sculptures went home with new owners – including three headed for public places around the Mid-Western region, thanks to Council.
The total amount raised over the two days for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT was over $20,000.
“The Mudgee Support Group for Guide Dogs volunteers worked hard over the two days to raise this figure through entry fees, raffles and catering,” Ms Norton-Knight said.
“Guide Dogs NSW/ACT will also get a share of the commission from the sale of sculptures, and the Sculptures in the Garden Committee hope to announce this final figure in the coming weeks.”
An addition to the annual public art event, a new feature, the Children’s Labyrinth was very popular with the children and was a great space to display the many entries the committee received from younger local artists.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore found it very hard to judge children’s entries and after much deliberation awarded prizes to several budding young artists and classes.

“Last year, we raised more than $19,000 for the Mudgee Support Group for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, which was a huge achievement.
“This year, Sculptures in the Garden, with funding assistance from Mid-Western Regional Council, will purchase sculptures from the exhibition up to the value of $11,000, to add to the local sculpture walk,” Amber said.
Other honours will be bestowed upon artists in the form of a People’s Choice Award and $5,000 Moolarben Acquisition Prize.
